Train with Vien

I provide physical therapy services exclusively to Stanford University Athletics, however provides personal training for those without pain at Performance Gaines in Palo Alto, CA. I also offer home services within 10 miles of Palo Alto given your home has sufficient equipment for your goal.

I have trained groups of up to 20 athletes at a time and 1-on-1 sessions since 2010 at private facilities and larger gyms. I am known for successful client-driven outcomes and developing self-efficacy in everyone. I specialize in sports performance training for those looking to improve vertical jump, speed, and strength. I also offer return to sports testing services for those looking to get back to sport after an injury; a detailed report is provided to the client and their physical therapist.

“…I always have faith in him guiding me to achieve my goals, and he has yet to let me down. Overall, he has gone above and beyond what I ever expected out of a trainer. “

– High School Club Rugby Player

“I met with Vien once a week but the structure of those sessions and the knowledge given gave me the motivation to return to the gym on my own, without the anxiety of not being sure what to do.”

– College Student

I am currently taking new clients as of 3/2022, however I am now limited to a few weekend spots. I am happy to provide a consult on whether you would be a good fit for his services and availability, and am also happy to refer to other great trainers at Performance Gaines or in the community.

“I’ve lost an inch off of my waist, my chest-press increased from a 60lb 3-rep-max to 105lbs, and my leg-press increased from 70lbs to 190lbs. For me, that’s HUGE. And with Vien’s training and motivation, we’ve been able to win the Staff and Faculty Fitness Challenge twice in a row!”

– University faculty member

“Vien is fun and upbeat.  Very professional and well prepared.  He makes my daughter smile even at 6:30AM.”

– Parent of club volleyball player

20% of annual my earnings are donated to:

  • Volunteer Outdoors California: An organization that cleans and develops paths for safe hiking and activity in local outdoor camping and hiking grounds.
  • PT in the Community: An organization that provides goods, education, and services to those in need. These communities are located in the cities that our national physical therapy organization’s largest conference is in. Some examples are donations of socks to those without homes, providing free fitness classes, and supplying local schools and facilities with sport equipments.
  • Private conference scholarships: In 2020 my PT colleagues throughout the US and I have provided financial assistance to 17 minority physical therapists to attend a sports medicine conference. I also funded 7 kinesiology students to attend other a sports performance conference. We hope to keep these efforts going, and to continue funding more expensive in-person trips. In 2021 I paid for 3 students to attend a strength and conditioning conference. Most recently in 2023, I was able to fund 10 students and early career professionals to attend a sports PT networking event.

Vien’s Services and Fees

Full-body strength testing/Return to Sports Assessment: $550: Participants will perform strength testing of their shoulder, hips, and knee muscles as well as perform squatting, jump, and balance tests on research-grade measurement devices. Based on the participant’s goals, a report is generated and data will be interpreted for the user to use themselves or for the user to take back to their personal trainer or health care provider. This is recommended for individuals who are self-rehabbing injuries or would like a progress check if they are rehabbing from surgeries. Vien will coordinate results with your healthcare provider. Sessions generally take 60 minutes

Performance Training/Rehab: $250 per session ($350 for first session)*: Participants will progress through their performance or rehab goals after an extensive participant guided-goal setting evaluation to determine quickest and best plan of care. This is an engaging session where participants will be active in their development through education and exercises. In general, those who do performance training see Vien twice a week, and those who rehab see Vien once a week. Those are the average frequencies, however Vien enjoys seeing participants save money and become independent by working with them as least as possible; individualized plans will be made upon the first session. 100% of Vien’s rehabbed participants have saved money and reached similar, or better outcomes, in less time compared to those who opt for insurance-based care based on comparison of patient-reported outcome research.
